Hexham Village Band

A Community Ceilidh Band Project Led by David Oliver

Hexham Village Band is an opportunity for any instrumentalist to take part in a traditional ceilidh band. It is suitable for a wide range of players, from relative beginners to those with considerable experience. Participants must be aged 16 or over.

There will be weekly workshops, monthly tune-playing sessions in a local pub (The Tap & Spile), and a half-termly ceilidh club providing an opportunity to play for dancing, with scope for individual performance ‘spots’ and for anyone to try their hand at calling dances. As the project develops we may travel beyond Tynedale to play at other dances and maybe the occasional festival. (But all aspects of the band’s activities will be open to democratic discussion and negotiation!)

Participants will develop instrumental skill, confidence and style, and will build up a repertoire of great dance tunes from Northumbria, other parts of the UK, and beyond. Much of the learning will be by ear, but written notation will be available for those who find it helpful.

The band is open to players of any portable acoustic instrument, who can play at least basic scales and a few straightforward tunes. There will also be plenty of scope for confident, experienced, adventurous players. (If you are in any doubt about the suitability of your instrument or your playing experience, please contact David Oliver.)

The project begins with a FREE TASTER SESSION on Saturday 8th January 2011, from 11.00 to 12.30 at Core Music, Hexham. During this session we will discuss the best regular meeting times for prospective participants, and other details such as fees.
Regular meetings will begin as soon as possible after that.

For more information, or if you are interested but cannot attend the taster session please contact David Oliver dmomusic@hotmail.co.uk

Core Music 2nd Birthday Celebrations

We had a fantastic day last Saturday (9th October) celebrating our birthday.

Local folk band Clockwork entertained the crowds at the Farmer’s Market and later on outside Waitrose.

Our very own Ukuteers ukulele band performed for the shoppers at Tesco whilst George Hutton and his Jazz Jammers gave a great show outside the Wentworth Leisure Centre.

In the meantime, 25 local independent shops and Farmer’s Market Stalls took part in our fabulous competitions – The Egg Shaker Draw and The Scavenger Hunt. All prizes were claimed and/or won during the day so a huge thank you to everyone who took part.

The winner of the first prize in the Scavenger Hunt was Aiden Manns – here seen being presented with his prize at Core Music by Chair, Simon Eedle.

Core Music 2nd Birthday Winner holding prize guitar

In the afternoon at Core Music we hosted a Harmonica workshop attended by 24 eager participants who were treated to a fabulous two hours in the company of harmonica virtuosos Martin Fletcher, Lyndon Anderson and Brian Lynam.

Thanks to everyone for making our second birthday really special – roll on next year!

Core Music 2nd Birthday Celebrations

Saturday 9th October 2010

At Core Music
Harmonica workshops
2-4pm, £5 adults, £3 concessions

Have a look at the rock section of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_harmonicists to see the surprisingly long list of familiar rock performers who play the harmonica as part of their music.  They will all have started with a cheap harmonica, probably playing the blues.

So, get your lips into gear  …. This is a fantastic opportunity to take part in a harmonica workshop led by talented players with experience in blues, swing, jazz, mic work, and ‘overblowing’.  Workshops are arranged for beginners, players, and performers.  Lyndon Anderson (Lyndon Anderson Band), Martin Fletcher (Dukes of Ellington, The Unusual Suspects, Blues Burglars) and Brian Lynam (No Time to Jive) will be leading the workshops. Lyndon, Martin and Brian are very accomplished performers and widely respected as harmonica players. Each will lead one of the workshops and they hope to be able to bring band colleagues with them to help give that very unique feel to the afternoon.

There will be a short performance by the workshop leaders as an introduction to the session and a concluding jam for all those taking part.

If you would just like to give the harmonica a try and learn how to play at a basic level, sign up for the ‘beginner’ workshop. If you can already play a little and maybe have aspirations of developing your technique sufficiently to play alongside others in a band, the ‘players’ workshop is for you. If you already play and perform well and would like share a few ideas and get a few tips from other talented players, you have to come along to the ‘performers’ workshop.
Core Music hopes that these workshops will lead on to follow up workshops later in the year, and maybe the formation of a harmonica club.  A workshop focussing on the Northumbrian ‘moothie’ style with Roy Hugman is tentatively planned, for example.

A harmonica will be necessary – from only £3.95 from Core Music.   Harmonicas in the key of A and C would be a good one to bring or buy.  We will have  a display of other harmonicas, from the inexpensive to the quite pricey.
Please book and pay in advance at Core Music
